id say manga then anime. sadly the second half of the anime cuts out a lot of the details from the manga, and as a result some things can be hard to understand and also just leads to weird pacing and makes things feel rushed. i also feel that the reason why you hear so many people say things like "i stopped watching death note after the first half" and "i dont like (specific character(s The second half, however, has a lot of manga material that they left out of the anime, including the entire last chapter.
